Alpha Particles stages an explosive collision of words, images and gestures, mixing fable, fantasy and physics in a psychedelic painting. In a fortress with roughly carved battlements, the artist improvises a symphony of signs, glyphs and pictograms: a dissonant chain of illogisms, duplications, interruptions and deviations. In the upper right corner, a five-headed being evokes the Panchamukhi Hanuman with the many faces of Hindu folklore. A scientific diagram unfolds under a misspelled title - "predatory white bass" - with a list of geographical territories. The plane gets out of control under a ball of blazing red energy, while an elephant stands in a pool of yellow paint. Although Basquiat's graffiti roots occupy an important place in the energetic scribbling of the work, his sporadic screen-printed elements testify to the important influence of his friend and mentor Andy Warhol, with whom he will begin in 1984 a series of collaborations.
