This book was published around 1855 with no date shown. The complete title is: "The People of China, Their History, Court, Religion, Legislature, Institutions, Tribunals, Agriculture, Language, Literature, Manufactures, Arts, Sciences, Manners and Customs." It was published in London by the Religious Tract Society. Three other copies of this book were found online for $250, $308 and $315.
The book is complete except for the map. The buying last page is barely connected and the pages are tanned with some stains but there is no foxing. The spine of the cover has missing pieces as seen in the photo and the corners of the cover show wear.
It has 336 pages with many engravings and is 5 5/8" high x 3 7/8" wide.
This book will provide a special view of China in the 1840's and 1850's by early visitors. Please enlarge the 6th photograph to have a sense of the text and assumptions of the author. On the inside back cover is a shopping list written long ago probably by a visitor in China.
