Note: I bought these hand-painted hearts more than 12 years ago from an American owned & operated company that had a limited quantity of folk art pieces from Slavic countries.

Russian lacquer art derives its unique, beautiful style from painters of religious icons dating from the 17th-19th century. When Imperial Russia fell in 1917, the icon painters began to paint other items and expand their market buying. Traditionally, the items are lacquered and then painted in miniature with highly detailed scenes from Russian fairy tales or folk life. Beads for jewelry tend to feature flowers and animals. Backgrounds are often lacquered in black or red. Today, craftsmanship varies so we search for exceptional workmanship.
