'Cassell's Book of Indoor Amusements, Card Games and Fireside Sun' is a wonderful collection of Victorian-era parlour games, toys, puzzles, card games and magic tricks for children. Beautifully bound and richly illustrated, this is the third edition published by Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co. in 1881.

The book features a red and green bookcloth hardcover with a black and gold printed and debossed illustrated design on the front and spine. The rear cover features a black printed and debossed decorative design. The edges of the text block are gilded. The condition of the cover and spine is very good, with the usual wear for a book of this age - slight rubbing to the edges and corners, and slight fading to the spine. There is a small nick in the bookcloth on the front edge of the spine. The spine is strong and intact and the binding remains firm overall, although one signature inside is a little loose at the top end.

Internally, there are matte black end papers to front and rear. The second front end paper has a pen inscription in the name 'L.H. Gregson', and the papers are in generally good condition with only minor marks. There is a monochrome engraving opposite the title page, with the original interleaving intact, and there are further engravings throughout the books buying to illustrate the various toys, games and puzzles described in the text. The main pages are in very good condition, lightly aged and with very occasional marks. The book ends with several pages of publishers adverts about everything from hobby and instructional books to classic literature. A lovely copy of a fascination book.
