Description

Product Name: Antique Humidor, W&R Carlton Ware Humidor, Tobacciana, buying Cheltenham College
c 1890 ceramic stoneware humidor tobacciana Still smells like its original tobacco! 5.5" tall buying x 4.5" diameter Created for Cheltenham Training College (1847-1852), now known as University of Gloucestershire. Made by W & R Stoke-on-Kent Carlton Ware. Ceramic lid, brown glaze, textured ceramic exterior, ceramic and metal lid Porcelain shield says in Latin: Disce Ut Doceas / Cheltenham Training College ("Learn in order to Teach," so perhaps it was a college for future teachers.) Fabulous antique airtight lid! The lid is ceramic and has a very old (hard and dried) rubberized gasket that would have sealed tightly into the jar by way of a brass twist-and-screw mechanism, which you can see in the pictures. Very good antique condition - I see no cracks or hairlines. There are a few very minor (and very old) chips on the rim. The rubber gasket is dried and cracked from age. The metal brass mechanism is discolored.
